My son will not eat!

My son is 16 months old and is VERY picky! If i try to feed him something new, he refuses without even trying it! Today has been very frustrating, for breakfast I made him some oatmeal w/strawberry peices in it and he took a bite & liked it but then refused anymore. So i gave in and gave him what he normally eats & he ate it all. For lunch i gave him a graduate meal & he ate a bite and chewed & swalled and wouldnt take anymore, made him a ham & cheese sandwich and wouldnt even try it...I need advice on how to get him to eat more & a variety. He starts daycare nov 5 and im so afraid hes going to be hungry all day!!

  • As long as he is trying what you make new than I say go ahead and make him something he will eat, just keep starting off with new foods. Now that DD is a week away from 2 if it is breakfast or lunch she does not get a replacement meal. If she trys it but doesn't eat I let her still get a morning or afternoon snack but the other day she refused her oatmeal so she did not get morning snack. She ate all her lunch! It is very age appropraite how you are handeling your picky eater.

  • make trying new foods fun. Offer him some new foods every meal it often takes up to 20 tries before a kid develops a taste for a new food. Let him help when you go shopping to look for new foods. Give him two choices to try as he gets a bit bigger say hey would you like to try this apple today or should we go with the orange. That allows him to be in control of his food choices but allows you to introduce some new tastes. Make sure you all are eating the same foods and showing him how much you enjoy them. Also try them prepared diffrent ways. My son wont eat a cooked carrot to save his life but give him some dip and raw carrots and he will munch them right down.

  • If he is hungry then he will eat it. If you give in your reinforcing the behavior. I wouldn't suggest giving him foods that he just really doesn't like but the things that he seems to like you need to try harder and for sure do not make him something else.

  • Ps- Daycare will most likely help because other kids will be there all eating the same thing, the workers will let you know if there is a situation so don't focus on that, just pack some healthy snacks and try not to cry on the 1st day! : )

  • Nope don't give in and give him something else. He will not starve himself. Make him his meal, if he likes it leave him in his seat for 15 minutes. If he doesn't eat it put it in the fridge and tell him he can have it when he's hungry. No making a second meal. If he truly doesn't like it fix something else. But it sounds like he just has one or two meals he really likes and wants all the time. You cant let that become a habit.

  • Try and find a home care situation for him that will be sensitve to his needs. You should be able to find a mom that is experienced with picky eaters. It's best if you can find someone that is only caring for her children and your child. Group care can be difficult for 16 mo. and trust your instincts that it is going to be hard for him.
