One-year-old eating troubles.

My one-year-old son is so stuborn, he refuses to eat off a spoon (or fork) if we offer it - and he hasn't quite mastered feeding himself, yet. He's gone without meals because of his refusal to be fed.
I've tried letting him "practice" with his own utensil, while I sneak a few bites in his mouth, but that's not even working now.
Will he just be eating hotdogs, mac & cheese, and other finger foods for a while?
[Yes, I do know the right way to slice a hotdog; lengthwise first.]

  • DD only likes chopsticks. lol She is a week away from 2, She would rather hang a spoon from her nose than put it in her applesauce. Spoon + ice cream = not a problem! haha But don't worry, I wouldn't let her go hungry even now just because she doesn't want to use her fork or spoon but I will take her plate and put a piece of hot dog on her fork than hand her the fork. She gets her plate back when she eats off her utensil.

  • I think it's ok to let a 1 year old use their hands a little while they are learning to use the spoon and fork, they will get it soon enough, no point in making him not eat a meal just because he hasn't gotten used to the utensils yet.

  • Just strip him naked, set him in his chair, put whatever you are eating on his tray, and let him do it himself. He'll get plenty in his mouth.

also, choking hazards aside, I still wouldn't give a one year old hot dogs.

  • I let him use his hands (hence h hotdogs and mac & cheese), but anything sticky or w/ sauce he doesn't like to use his hands. He doesn't like to eat small things like rice or corn w/ his hands either.

  • hot dogs are nasty. they are filled with nasty shit. why does a 1 yr old need that?

  • my son is almost one. he eats with his hands really well. i do what previous poster said. i strip him down to his diaper so he doesn't get food on his clothes then i put him in his highchair and cut up whatever we're eating. i put his food on his tray and he eats it. he doesn't care if his food is sticky because he'll eat when he's hungry. he gets plenty of food without me helping him. i don't feed him hot dogs though. i'm too scared he'll choke.
