sharp pain in upper right abdomen

i'm asking this for my husband. it's taking forever for his insurance to go through but once he does i'm taking him to the doctor. anyway for the past couple days he's been getting sharp pains in his upper right abdomen (where the gallbladder is) and my first thought was gallstones but i always thought you had a constant pain with gallstones. anyone have any idea??? they come and go and like i said it's been for a few days....oh and he also hasn't been pooping solid
