anyone else had problems with there 4-5 year olds "stool holding"?

my son just turned 5, he seemed to be completely potty trained at 3. for about 6 months then he started holding in his poop as long as he can, he will not go to the potty unless you see him & personally ask him if he has to use it when hes trying to hold it. seem like everything else is more important that he cant stop & use it.

just wondering if any other moms had this problem, luckly he dont start school till next year. talked to the doctor about it he told us use mineral oil, we have been the past month & no changes yet.

any ideals? thank you

  • well, my son just wouldn't go because he was having too much fun living and playing. i started to set a time when i said go try to use the potty, to avaoid tyhis. it was always in the evening, or late afternoon after daycare.. so he could relax and try. either before dinner to make room for food lol, or after, when the digestive system is rtolling and actually helps a child to go a little due to all the activity and food entered in. i never had to use mineral oil or amythin gbut a failproof thing is to boil some prunes in water and alittle orange juice til theyre soft and sweet and chill them and let the child eat them or some pureed prunes, and this works like a CHARM naturally. my son called it "tangy fruit" and liked prunes.. i did too as a girl. if yours dont,. just mix it in with applesauce or vanilla pudding or something else. good luck just try these routines or prunes maybe.
