boys acting like girls

my son is 6 and has a fascination with girls toys, music, etc. he has been known to walk around singing selena gomez or hannah montana and dancing in school, the grocery store, etc. i personally don't mind it so much but i have heard comments from family members about how he needs more male interaction. (i'm a single mom). what do you think?

  • Gender roles are imposed by society and culture, they have nothing to do with your child's sex or sexuality. There are no appropriate toys or clothes or behavior for boy children. He has his own interests. If I were you, since it doesn't concern you, I would focus my attention on silencing those family members before they give him a negative self-image. Think about it opposite, if you had a girl child who liked sports and played rough, would your family members have cause to worry or say she needed more girls in her life? Likely not.

  • He likes what he likes- he's choosing what he likes to do - I think single mother or not, he'd be doing this - let them make the comments...

  • I'm with Sabrina...he is 6, he shouldn't have stereotypical roles shoved down his throat...keep it all neutral.

  • I refuse to enforce gender roles, they'll have it all figured out in their own time. My boys do the same thing, but it's more like singing Tori Amos or Mazzy Star. lol
My DD wears boyish clothes more often than not- why should any of that bother you? He's a kid. Let him have fun while he still can.

  • I think if he's having fun, why let it bother you? I mean, he's not hurting anyone, and he's enjoying himself... No harm no file!

  • He is just exploring. Maybe he likes the songs (and since when are girl singers only for girls?) My son likes to play with his cousins dolls. He'll be fine.

  • I agree with Sabrina. I know little boys who played with Barbies and they are perfectly fine. Also they DID have a father around.
