Anybody wanting to read this book?

The book, “Obama’s Wars,” by the journalist Bob Woodward, depicts an administration deeply torn over the war in Afghanistan even as the president agreed to triple troop levels there amid suspicion that he was being boxed in by the military. Mr. Obama’s top White House adviser on Afghanistan and his special envoy for the region are described as believing the strategy will not work.

  • "The president concluded from the start that “I have two years with the public on this” and pressed advisers for ways to avoid a big escalation, the book says. “I want an exit strategy,” he implored at one meeting. Privately, he told Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to push his alternative strategy opposing a big troop buildup in meetings, and while Mr. Obama ultimately rejected it, he set a withdrawal timetable because, “I can’t lose the whole Democratic Party.”

But Mr. Biden is not the only one who harbors doubts about the strategy’s chances for success. Lt. Gen. Douglas E. Lute, the president’s Afghanistan adviser, is described as believing that the president’s review did not “add up” to the decision he made. "

Some context on the competing narratives:

“Obama’s Wars,” Bob Woodward’s 16th book—the previous 15 have all been best-sellers and often dominated the news upon release—comes out Monday. Administration officials believe, but so far don’t know for sure, that their bet on lavishing the Watergate legend with cooperation paid off with a largely sympathetic portrait they expect looks something like this:

A young commander-in-chief, with no military experience, inherits festering, deteriorating conditions in Afghanistan. After some scraps with military brass who were testing their limits, Obam

  • I have read most of Woodward's books.
All The President's Men" written with Carl Beenstein was excellent.
But I am not sure about how honest or accurate he is. i read that he is fed CIA info and "bends the truth" in many cases. His book about "Deep Throat" makes me wonder....I don't think he really knows who "DeepThroat" is.... he names a guy who died and can't defend himself. So.....
But I think I will read this book....with a grain of salt.

  • Bob Woodard - wow ...... heavy hitter. He and Berstein blew the top off the Watergate scandal. He has a lot of credibility. This is going to be a big problem for PBO.
