Pumpkin decorating ideas for Girl Scouts?

Okay crafty Mamas, I need your help! We are going to be decorating pumpkins with our Girl Scout troop...any ideas how to do this? We are not going to carve them...too dangerous! I thought about paint but we meet at a church and I'm not sure how the parents will feel about bringing home wet painted pumpkins in their cars since we can't leave them at the church to dry. So, any ideas how to decorate these pumpkins?

  • Pipe cleaners/chenile stems & stick on felt or foam work well with this. They can wind the pipe cleaners around pencils to get them curly & then stick in the pumpkin & if they need to they can use a pencil to make a hole to stick the pipe cleaner in first. They can use the felt or fun foam to add accents. You can usually find big tubs of fun foam or felt shapes in the craft dept. at Walmart. If you can't find the stick on ones you can use regular glue to stick them on.

  • Fake hair, hot glue, google eyes, felt for lips, nose, plastic ear rings and beads for necklaces.....or just give them the hair and some old make up and let them go at it.

  • You can use paint. We just did one at the pumpkin patch with our 5 year-old. Set it on a paper plate so that you can carry it with one hand on the stem of the pumpkin, one hand under the plate. Also, if you paint them towards the beginning of the meeting they should be mostly dry by the time the girls go home.

Otherwise, sharpie markers instead of paint and I also 2nd the googley eyes and pipecleaners.

  • they can make BATS! you paint the pumpkin black, then put on googly eyes and teeth using craft foam to cut shapes out of, then using the "bat template" on, use black craft foam and cut out bat wings. Adults can cut slits to insert the wings into, or they can glue or tape them on. They come out really cute! We paint pumpkins every year because we have a patch of the small ones, we just use acrylics.. they are about $1.00 a bottle at JoAnnes, or Michaels craft.
