What is a good substitute for coffee filters?

i have run out of coffee filters and so i have been using toilet paper as filters. Everynow and then i find tiny white particles but as long as i am saving money i don't think it will hurt me.

  • I use Maxi pads when I'm out of filters. I just keep forgetting not to use ones that have been used.

(This is on the same level as using toilet paper)

Make sure you dry the toilet paper out if it's used, but otherwise it's fine to use toilet paper. Just pick the particles out of your coffee.

  • I would think a paper towel would be better.

  • They also make metal filters that are about $4 a piece and last for a long time (I've had mine over a year and I'm sure it'll be years before I need a new one). I personally think with the price of toilet paper/paper towels/napkins you're still better off buying filters. I understand using them if you tun out, but probably not as a way to save money. Also I'm not sure how well toilet paper would really filter it unless it's pretty thick toilet paper.

  • I too was going to suggest paper towel. However cheesecloth would be good too since it can be reused.

  • My Mom being a single parent of 3 children had to improvise sometimes. She took a paper towel and seperated (it's actually two sheets) and used that, she said you just had to make sure to not use printed paper towels!

  • When I used to make coffee regularly (I dont anymore), I bought a reusable filter at the dollar store. So, yeah, for a dollar you can have lint free coffee!

  • My mom would use a paper towel. I have a Kenmore coffee maker and do not need to use coffee filters. It came with a special insert.
