What does this learning issue sound like?

My 9 year old son struggles in almost every school subject. This question pertains to spelling though.

Every day I verbally quiz him on his spelling words. He gets them all correct. So I decided to give him a written practice test. He got several wrong. But when I verbally ask him right after the test he knows them again. Any ideas what the issue may be?

  • try practicing writing them... it could be text anxiety too.

  • Maybe he's dyslectic. Have you had him evaluated by the school?

  • Could be test anxiety too - pressures he feels while being quizzed. Could be a "laziness" or a desire for speed when writing words to paper. He may just need more practice, encouragement, and support.

  • are some of the letters just transposed. If they are then he may be dyslexic. I would have him evaluated.

  • It's not a transposed issue. I'll give some examples. The word LUCK. When he writes it on paper it turns into LUC. The word DOES. On paper turns into DUZ. The word LOT. On paper it turns into LUT.

I'm so confused by him. The teacher has already chopped his spelling list from 20 words down to 12 and he still can't handle it.
