My 23 month old son discovered his shadow and he is so scared of it he is afraid to take a bath because he sees it on the wall. Any suggestions on how to get him back in the tub? Thanks...

  • Get flashlight and teach him how to make shadows on the wall, birds, butterflies, dog, ect.
Maybe that will help him to understand that they're nothing to be afraid of.

  • Get a small flashlight and let him play with it. Show him how he can make a spot on the wall. After he gets used to that, show him how he can put his fingers in front of the light to make a shadow. Finally, lay it on the floor and dance in front of it with him - showing him how you can make full shadows on the wall.
This may take several days, be patient.
In the meantime, can you rig a light right over the tub to get rid of his shadow? Or how about letting him take a bath in the dark or with a candle in the room (obviously, you run the candle!). If none of those work, sponge baths until he is happy with the tub again won't hurt.

  • oh my i'm sorry but this made me smile. i miss that age. i love the idea of the flashlights and i know my daughter had a great book about shadow play. also, as far as a light over the tub, they have those kind for the garage that wrap around cars and things? sort of like flashlights but bendable? lol, do you know what i mean? hands-free that could go right on the shower curtain. maybe some new tub toys might entice him, too. let us know!
