Pneumonia? Strep? Mono?

My daughter has had a cough for about 2 weeks. Her voice has been pretty horse as well to. The past few days she says her throat hurts sometimes and it hurts really bad when she coughs (she is 6 BTW) and that she feels sooo tired. She is acting like herself but getting really tired, and eevn took a nap today, which is not normal for her to ever take a nap anymore. She also has a fever of 101. We are going to Drs tomorrow, Im just curious to what it could be. Surely if it was pneumonia she would feel worse than what she does right

  • has she has fever for the 2 weeks? Generally speaking fevers for more then 72 hours need treatment with an antibiotic

  • It could be walking pneumonia and she wouldn't be so bad off. I wouldn't think strep but possibly mono.

  • strep and mono don't usually cause a cough... and she probably would have had a fever before now.
She could possibly have pneumonia, but again, she would likely have a fever before now.
She probably just has a virus
And fevers that last more than 72 hours do not require an antibiotic... a fever that lasts more than 5 days might require an antibiotic... but most viral illnesses have fevers for 4-6 days.

  • Doubt it's Mono, too young.

  • It could also be allergies. My son had a cough forever last fall, and ultimately, it was allergies. He did develop pneumonia from all the coughing and congestion, but that was easily cleared up. His cough is back again this fall, but not nearly as bad since he's been on his allergy meds for a full year and we know how to treat it now.
