If I should die before I wake?

We all know the prayer... If I should die before I wake, I pray the lord my soul to take...

Does anyone know where that came from? Who wrote it? How old it is?

I'm just curious...

  • I tried, but with the new movie coming out... That's just about all I'm finding, no actual facts... Of course I didn't read all 500 pages that came up either...

  • Don't know anything about where/when it came from, but I do know it scares the crap outta me. I refuse to teach it to my children.

  • Yeah, I would never teach it to my kids... It doesn't blend with my beliefs anyways

  • why does it scare you? its rather simple..if you pray it, and you believe in God, its asking God to care for you/your soul if something should happen to you while you sleep. think about it..religion/beliefs aside..life isn't guaranteed. anyone of us could 'go' anytime.
as a believer, its a reassurance that i will be ok, my soul will be with God, and no where else. i mean, no one likes to think about dying, but its inevitable.

if you don't believe, its no big thang.
