Dog food for PICKY PICKY dog.

Found a small dog week and 1/2 ago. He's 8 pounds. Chihauhau/MinPin Mix. You would think he'd be grateful for being saved from certain death on the streets and be willing to eat anything. Well, he's not. He ate a bit of dry & wet food the first couple days we had him. Then he snubbed his nose at all dry food. Then he simply refused wet food. We got him neutered Sunday and needed him to regain strength. So since he was refusing dog food I made him boiled chicken & white rice. Now the butt head won't eat anything but that.
I need to know a good dog food for finicky little dogs because I refuse to cook for him every night.

  • First of all, choose a high quality brand (NOT anything from Purina, Pedigree, Iams/Eukanuba, Science Diet...all of these are mostly corn/gluten, wheat/gluten, soy, other fillers/byproducts, and artificial colors/preservatives). A couple of good sites to look at are http://www.dogfoodproject.com/, http://www.dogster.com/forums/, http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/, and http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/. Once you decide on a food, stick with it for a while (later on, once the dog isn't so picky, you can try a rotation diet). Put the dog's food down for 15-20 minutes and if he doesn't eat, pick it up until the next meal. I would offer a small dog like that food three times/day since they can suffer from hypoglycemia (that's low blood sugar for those who might not know). In no time, he should be eating great again. If not, take him to the vet to rule out any health issues. A healthy dog will NOT let himself starve.

  • A dog will eat anything when he is hungry. I would put out the food...and eventually he will learn to like it. No animal will allow themselves to starve to death when food is laying right there.

  • I would just put it down for him, he'll eat when he's hungry... We give ours Lamb and Rice dogfood.. Just be sure MEAT is the main ingredient.. Good for you for rescuing the little Booger!!!!

  • I have a chi mix and the only food she will eat is Purina ONE.... it took a lot of letting it lay there for a day or so but then she started eating it, and not won't eat anything but.. I can't change foods, she gets grumpy and won't eat... I can't even change the treats I buy for her LOL

  • My furbie is a fussy eater too, but finally I just left it there and she will eat when she's hungry enough, even tho I feel like I'm mean doing it. We feed her Natural Balance and mix in some cooked ground turkey or hamb a couple times a week.
