When do they start getting fatter?

My DD is 3 weeks old and she looks like shes gotten a little bit chunkier, mostly in her face though, her legs are still tiny little bird legs! When do they start packin' on the pounds? When did you LO get bigger?

  • Some never do and just stay skinny. My first stayed pretty skinny and has thickened out now that he's older (4). My second was a preemie and basically born with very little fat. He packed on the lbs (gaining nearly a lb a week the first 6 weeks!) and was a little chunker by 3 months. He's thinned out now, though (18mo)

  • My son is turning 3 soon and never once did he have a roll or was he ever considered chunky by any means..

  • It all depends on the kids and breastfeeding/formula feeding makes a difference too. I nursed both my kids and my first was skinny all along (still is at 5 years old) and my second was born a little chunkier then her brother, but never got the "baby fat" that most talk about.

  • It depends on if they're breastfed or Formula Fed. Breastmilk doesn't have a lot of fat in it, so it can take longer for BF babies to fill in. However, Formula is packed with fats, calories, and other nutrients that help babies gain weight. Which can lead to them building up faster then BF babies. Both of my kiddoes started filling out around 1-2 months. Both were BF for three weeks before they refused and were then formula fed.
