  • There are three main causes of UTI's.

One is sex...yes, you ca get them from sex, not as a transmitted disease, but rather depending on the position you can have bacteria shoved up there in turn causing a UTI.

Another is waiting too long to go pee when you have to go. Urine contains bacteria, and when you pee you flush that out of your system. If you hold it, you are giving the bacteria a chance to colonize in your bladder and in your urethra.

Along those same lines as the previous reason is not staying hydrated enough. Not staying hydrated = not peeing as often = bacteria getting a chance to colonize.

  • the ph in your system can be off, too (just to add to carolyn's great answer). this is why cranberry juice is so widely recommended, however recently it has been learned that sugar can feed the bacteria so it's best to choose a juice that is low or sugar free. you can use any juice that is not citrus (oj, lemon, etc). drinking the juice helps change the ph in your bladder and the bacteria cannot stick to the walls of the bladder.
