Who comes first, yourself or your child/ren?

I have my own opinion but I want to see how others will respond first because this was a debate recently amongst myself and SO.

  • My honest opinion is, how can you take care of your family if you don't take care of yourself first? That being said, I will buy food, clothes, etc for my daughter before I buy anything for myself!

  • Are you kidding? YOUR CHILDREN. There have been times where I have literally went hungry or without clothes because my kids needed it. And I did it without complaining and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

  • this topic can often be misconscrued, whoever is in harms way will always come first thats just natural, but for regular dy to day life I believe if the parents put eachother first this in turn is best for the children......happy parents happy children.

  • There were also many times where there was nothing under the Christmas tree for dh or myself but there were things we struggled to buy for kids. Their happiness and needs mean more to me than anything in this world.

  • honestly it depends on what we are talking abut here....I am by no mean selfish, I do often put myself first. That is NOT to say that my DD ever goes without the things she NEEDS so that I can have what I WANT. Not even close. Yes, I put my desires above hers sometimes, that does NOT make me a bad mom, my DD LOVES me, we have a GREAT relationship. She is a happy, well adjusted, mild mannered, affectionate, loving, sweet little girl.

  • If I am on a plane and the oxygen masks fall I will be putting mine on first. How can I care for my child if I dont take care of myself. That does not mean I take from my child.
