When is a good age to stop using car seats?

My son is 6 and is still in a car seat. DH believes it's time to get rid of it. What do you think?

  • when they can pass all 5 of these AND meet your states guidelines

    The 5-Step Test.

    1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat?
    2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?
    3. Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm?
    4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs?
    5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip?

  • You will have to look into the laws in your state. Sometimes it's just a weight/height limit, sometimes an age limit, and sometimes both.

  • When they can legally and properly ride without one. It's based on a few factors, age, weight, height, maturity, laws...and are you talking about coming out of a 5 point harness and into a booster seat, or out of a booster into a regular seat belt?

  • It is really based more on height and weight not age. Speak with your pediatrician or law enforcement to find out if you can legally.

  • I stoped when my kids were 5 but I was allowed by law. I don't know the age limit of different states.

  • My son will be 4 next month and we use the booster seat...so it really just gives him height and he uses the car seat belt to secure him in...about a year ago he didnt want to sit in the car seat anymore...and doc suggested the booster seat...and ds loves it :)
