  • Butter a 9x13" glass baking dish. Pour in sauce. Place an apple on each pastry square, the fill the center with sugar that's been combined with cinnamon and nutmeg. Top with a pat of butter (about 1/2 tbsp). Fold the pastry over the apple and pinch the edges. Brush the tops with cream and sprinkle with turbinado or raw sugar.
Place into pan. Bake at 375*f for 35 min, or until deep golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream, or whipped cream, or alone.

  • 2 C Flour
    2 tsp Baking Powder
    1 Tsp Salt
    2/3 C Shortening or Lard
    1/2 C Milk
6 Macintosh, Granny Smith, or Gravenstein Apples, peeled & cored
sugar (at least 1 3/4 cups, probably 2 cups)
    turbinado or raw sugar (optional)

Combine flour, salt, baking powder in bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Add milk, and mix just until dough forms. Roll out on floured or cloth covered board into a large rectangle, then divide into 6 squares.
Make the sauce: Combine 1 c each water & sugar, plus 1 tsp each cinnamon and nutmeg. Heat to boiling, then allow to cool until just warm.
