is there a positive way of training my male dog

when he doesn't mark to praise him? i don't see this as being possible. if i pet him to say good dog for not marking he will only think he has been a good boy without knowing how. i got him as an adult intact. i sent for a neuter voucher from the state and they sent it back saying i have to go down there on a first come first serve basis. well i live to far and will stop by there if i have other business to do in town. so until then i have been trying to train him not to mark. i know consistency is everything. so i have been trying to set him up, since i know he doesn't do it while i'm around i leave for just 2 secs and try to catch him when he thinks i'm not looking. when i catch him i startle him, grab him spank his button and put him out for the rest of the day. he didn't mark for 2 days until just now. how do i praise for doing a good job? how do i reprimand him when he does wrong? am what i am doing so wrong? don't bash!

  • I used to work for a lady that trains dogs. Sorry, but you are going about this all wrong. First of all, when he marks outside, praise him. Only when he marks outside. When he marks inside, growl loudly at him, and grab him by the scruff of his neck and shake him a little. Then be sure to take him out immeadiatly. You are going to have to teach him that you are the alpha dog. This is the only way to do it. With dogs, it is all about who is boss, And if he thinks that he can get away with something, he will try. It will take you a little longer than if you had gotten a puppy, and because he has been going inside already, but in a few weeks, if you train him like this, you will see results.

  • Unfortunatly, having him fixed won't cure him of marking. Just coninue to love on him. Instead of spanking him when he marks, get a soda can and put pennies in it. When you catch him marking, shake the can at him. This also works for jumping on people, etc. Reprimands only work if you catch him in the act. Be sure to really lay in on praising him when you're outside. Good luck and enjoy your new dog! He will catch on in time. :)

  • Get him a doggie diaper. Our JRT marks EVERYTHING and it got worse when we brought the twins home. Now I have THREE in diapers, but my house is clean ;)

  • Male dogs mark....honestly if it bothers you this much, why did you get a male dog? And neutering him won't make a difference, though you still should. You are fighting an uphill battle here and though I am experienced with dogs, I don't think this is a behavior that can be trained without really confusing the dog.

  • i like that idea. well i knew i could train him not to and it's really no different then teaching him not to pee or poo in the house. i wonder if the can will scare the piss out of him? i do catch him in the act. i set it up like i said i walk around the corner and watch him to see if he is on the prowl for a spot. i never spank him when i find a spot. although when i do i call his name and he heads straight for the doggie door. lol

  • Hitting him will not solve it. If he is marking in the house you can use a water gun when you catch him in the act. That will teach him not to in the house. As far as a positive training method you might look up Clicker training
