We live in a low-med cost of living area. For me to be a permanent stay at home mom, my husband would need to make about $50,000 a year.

The easy answer is 120% of your expenditures. The actual dollar amount depends on where you live and how much you spend. The sad fact is that no matter how much is made, the expenditures will adjust to the income and you will never be able to afford staying at home unless it is pre-planned and the plans are written in stone.
But for me, personally, he would need to make $135,000 without benefits and maybe $90,000 with excellent benefits. Our health insurance alone is about $700 per month, not including the $5,200 deductible per person.
