Do you pack your childs lunch?

Do you ask them if they ate it, enjoyed it, etc?

Do you allow them to choose what items you may include?

My daughter will be starting kindergarden next year and I am going to try my best to pack her lunch because I remember hating school food and they never had a good and healthy enough selection. (I'm not saying they don't... I just remember wanting salads and they only had pizza, etc.)

Is it more common to take lunch now days or to buy it from school?

Does your child have a special lunch box?

  • I make their lunch every day. $75 a month (two kids) gets expensive and I can prepare their lunches cheaper than that and have a say-so in what they eat.

They never know what they're getting, but I know what they like so I don't get too crazy. I have them bring home what they didn't eat every day and that way I get a feel for what not to pack. I try to include something new at least once a week.

They did get to pick out their own lunch bag before school started.

  • The only time I pack my kids a lunch if if they have a field trip and need a sack lunch-- and then I pack a pbj sandwich, fruit/applesauce or a fruit cup, and a treat. Otherwise the kids have the school hot lunch.

  • my dd has a lunch box. She picked it out. Our school lunches are GREAT! It varies alot from school to school. I let my dd pick what days she wants a lunch box and I just pack it myself. She may say she wants ham or pbj. I give her choices if I can.

  • Our school lunches are awesome! I go eat with him on Fridays some just to have a good cheap meal! I do pack his lunch once a week though. His lunches are 1.75 a day and I can't pack an equivalent lunch for that price. Here was today's menu You get one entree and 2 sides.: (gotta love the dorky names right?)
    Veggie du Jour
    Mini Asian Eggroll
    Groovy Green Garden Salad
    Cool Fruit Chillers
    Crispy Fresh Fruit
    Cheese Sticks

  • I have 3 kids and they do all take lunch. They can buy one day a week if they like what is on the menu. They all picked out their own lunch bag so are happy to take their lunch. I have a 8, 7, and 5 year old and I let them pick their lunch but I double check what they have picked out.I even keep a box on my bottom shelve in food cabinet of special things they can choose from such as fruit snacks, pudding cups, cookies, peanut butter crackers, and sandwich stuff like jelly and peanut butter. One takes a thermos with tea and the other two take capri suns or koolaid jammers. There is helpers that are lunch aides to help open things that they would have trouble opening themselves. I also get cute napkins and add one each day and they love to see what new ones they have.Hope that helps out a little.

  • my son's school has a great menu too, it the a la carte thing where you pick 1 entree and 2 sides...However it is expensive at $2 a day and he is a picky kid so he would rather pack every day.
I pack his lunch in the mornings while he is eating breakfast. I let him pic between 2 choices like pb&j or ham and cheese, milk or juice, apple or yogurt. Sometimes I also pack a little suprise for him, a cookie or fruit snacks something that he isnt expecting.

  • Yes, I pack lunches because our public primary schools don't provde lunch. I do give the kids input into what I pack. The school also has rules about what I can pack (ie. no nuts and no junk food.)

  • My kids get their lunch at school (they're on the free lunch program).  They have a pretty good variety at their school.  Every day they have several options including a sandwich with fruit and crackers on the side, some kind of salad, something more "junky" (like hamburger or pizza) and something vegetarian and/or different (like teryiaki chicken with rice pilaf and veggies) and fresh fruit and veggies are available every day for all the kids (even the ones not buying/getting lunch).
