How much do you spend on food a month?

I set aside $350 for me, my husband and our child, but even that amount doesn't seem to do it! We are starving at the end of the month. How much do you spend on food in a month? (fast food doesn't count here)

  • I spend $350.00 a month. I go shopping at Aldi's and Save alot for all my stuff except my meats.. I go to walmart for that.. and also I get my frozen vegtables there.. last month for 289.00 I got all our groceries.. including a whole ham and a whole turkey.. Buying a whole ham or turkey.. each monthy sure makes my meat budgest streach.. gives 2 large meals and then sandwich meats.. and allows for enough meats for atleast 2 casseroles.. I love it!

  • We're a family of 5 and have special needs--diabetes and food allergies, so foods cost us a little bit more than average I think. It's been about $500 a month at Walmart, Wegmans, and Aldi combined.

  • Are your food budgets including nonfood items like household cleaners and paper products?

  • My "just food" budget for my family of 7 (4 adults, 1 teen boy, 2 tweens) is $300 or less a month; last month I did it for $218.25. I am diabetic but I don't buy "special" foods; I use portion control and cut out most sweets for myself.

I do cook from scratch: breads, tortillas, snacks, even pastas and salad dressings. We eat VERY well.

  • Wow, michiganmom, that's amazing. For our combined food and household budget I spend almost that much in a week!

  • We spend anywhere from $40 to $100 a week depending on what all we need (if we're restocking the cabinets, buying dog food, buying diapers, buying household items, etc.). So that means about $160 to $400 a month.

  • We have severe food allergies and end up having to buy items that are more expensive. Usually $400 sometimes more.
