is it safe?

general question. If it was safe to take while pregnant then is it safe while nursing?

  • not always.... you still have to check. some things are not allowed during pregnancy, but are when nursing, and some things pass into the breastmilk readily, so it's always best to check with the dr.

  • will it different for everything but the meds i take where ok to take while i was pregnant but i cant nurse b/c of the meds

  • There are two places you can go to get information on what is safe while breastfeeding. Kelly Mom - http://www.kellymom.com/health/index.html and Lactmed - http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT

    Some things may not be safe that were previously safe only because they can cause your milk to dry up. Which when you're pregnant isn't really a big deal, but when breastfeeding, obviously is a very big deal.

  • I agree that if you're unsure, you should ask an IBCLC, LLL leader, check LactMed, check with Dr Hale or get his book. Most meds are safe while nursing, but it's always good to know where to look.
