When is it safe to put a blanket on my daughter in her crib at night?

My daughter is going on 9 months, and I sometimes feel like the blanket sleeper or her pj's arent warm enough and the chilly weather is coming (NJ). So I wanted to know if its safe to put a blanket on her noew or do I need to wait until she's a year?

  • I always gave my children a blanket from day one. At 9 mos, if she's cold, give the poor girl a blanket...

  • My DD always got a blanket if she needed one, from when she was a newborn.

  • My son has had blankets on him since he was born. In my opinion, it depends on how much your baby moves. But keeping her warm is also very important! I think it's perfectly safe - just tuck it around her, under her arms - that way, there's less likelyhood she'll get it up over her face. If you're worried, keep an eye on her during nap times during the day to see how she fares with it. I've never had any problems with my little guy.

  • I swaddled her from day one...once she was big enough to wiggle out of her swaddling, I figured that meant she was big/mobile enough to handle a blanket in bed with her.

  • I might do that then.....our doctor makes us paranoid about it.

  • Yeah if she's nine months she's probably plenty big and able to move around a lot...our doctor freaked us out about stuff too. It must just mean a lot of liability on their end. :-/ The pediatrician we had with our first literally freaked out when I told her that my oldest wouldn't stop rolling over onto her stomach at night. I'd put her on her back, and she would NEVER sleep without rolling over onto her stomach first. The doctor kept telling me I had to do something about it...like what? TAPE her onto her back? lol

  • At nine months, I would probably give a blanket. Just not too thick. Or you could go with a sleep sack. My DD is 13 months, and just starting sleeping with a blanket.
