Quilting question...

I wash my material before I begin a quilt.
Can I just use a quilt after it is finsihed without washing it afterwards?
I tried to wash a wall quilt once and a seam popped out.
Do people wash finsihed quilts?

  • if it is decorative its not necessary. If it is for actual use, then I do. Batting contains several chemical additives that I prefer be laundered because some people react to them. You should try reinforcing outer seams if you are concerned about one coming loose, and always backstitch when finishing one. Also make sure that you are using a sturdy cotton thread made for machine quilting.

  • I don't think you have to wash it immediately after making it, but I do wash my quilts periodically, just to get them clean from dust and general use.
