what do you look for when searching for a new house?

square-footage, outdoor space, and age are our top priorities. (other than price, of course!)

  • The last time we moved the top priorities were finding a home with at least 4 bedrooms and an office, at least 2200 square feet, and in the same neighborhood as our old home.

  • Price was the only thing with our first. Now we're on the lookout for our 2nd. Price of course. Enough bedrooms. Plenty of storage. Decent sized kitchen. Has to be in the country, preferrably with over 12 acres (to qualify for farm loan!). Garage connected to the house. Age doesn't matter as long as it's in good shape!

  • Location and school system were our top priorities. I researched local schools for months before narrowing down places we were willing to buy. Some of the schools here are great, and some are terrible.

Second consideration was that it fit our needs. At least 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room and a family room that would be for the kids' playroom. We needed an office space and enough room for all of my husband's tools and supplies. A place to put in utility parking to tuck his truck and trailer away. A yard. NO pool. High ceilings, good sized rooms. Storage space.

The thing that was dead last on our list was the home's condition. We love projects, so we didn't mind buying something and then ripping it apart to replace all the tile, appliances, carpet, glass, mirrors, landscaping, repainting, etc.

We bought this house in 2008 and I'm already wondering if we should have bought a little bigger, though.
