Question for good pumpkin carvers

Ok, so I found this free pumpkin pattern online, and I have no idea how to go about carving it. Do I have to cut out all the black and shave the areas that are gray? This is the link of the pattern I'm talking about.
Thanks so much! :)

  • No, tape the design to the pumpkin then use a poker to make small holes through the paper and into the pumpkin everywhere that will need to be cut. Then remove the paper and make your cuts.

  • Whoops, I guess I should clarify a little bit. I know I need to punch little holes into the pumpkin fitting said pattern. What I don't know is once the design is outlined onto the pumpkin, do I need to cut out the areas that are black and shave the gray areas to allow light to come through?
