Not sure if this is considered a food allergy or not....

We just started to introduce my son to baby foods. He loved squash and we just tried sweet potato the past 2 days. He did fine with the squash...but he had really bad runny diaherra with the sweet potato. Is that considered a food allergy?

We go to the doctors next week for 6 month check up so i'll ask him but wanted to know if i should be concern in the mean time.

  • No. A food allergy is where they develop hives or they can't breathe. He may be intolerant to the food but a food allergy can kill someone.

  • it could be a food allergy they are rated on scales of 0-5. my son gets diarrhea with certain foods he is allergic to and more serious food reactions with other foods. we see a specialist and have an epi pen on hand at all times. take him off the sweet potatoes for 1 week to completely clear his system and dont start anything new. then after one week start the sweet potatoes again and see what the reaction is. • Diarrhea can indicate a food allergy. Hold off on sweet potato until you talk to the doc, better safe than sorry.

  • Sweet potatoes are good for that. Try mixing them with cereal for a feeding. That is just common with the type of food. An allergic reaction would be like bumps, or a rash, or throat/tongue swelling, so I think you're okay! GL

  • Yes, mild food allergies can cause diarhea. I have allergies all kinds of food, and the reactions can vary from upset stomach and/or diarrhea, hives and clear up to life-threatening. Ask your doctor about an allergy test, it is not a difficult or invasive procedure, but I think they won't do them on babies under 2. Not sure though.
