At what age do you allow your kids to ride their bikes around the neighborhood by themselves?

  • that is completely open for interruption.
    do you trust your neighbors? have you checked the sex offenders list in your area? do you know your neighbors? what is the traffic like?
    can you go with them a few times as a trial run? do your kids normally obey and respect traffic, others and a time restraint?
    i would not let anyone talk you into letting them unless you are 1000%, yes 1000% sure you are comfortable.

  • We started this summer when our older 3 kids were 7, 8 and 10.  That was when we were in Chicago and they had to tell us they were riding around (mostly to and from the park around the corner and to and from their friend's house a couple blocks away).

    Since we moved they don't have bikes but I would allow them to ride all over here.  There is almost no traffic since the only people that come into this development live here (there are only 2 ways in).
