  • Its controversial because the idea that we celebrate someone who was nothing but a dumb pirate is ludacris. Credit is never given freely where it is due...look how long it took for states to make Martin Luther King Day a holiday (& not all states comply)!

  • It is?

Answer by SuperrMommyy at 1:49 PM on Oct. 11, 2010

  • It's controversial because Christopher Columbus and his crew, once they landed here, raped the woman and killed the men.

  • My reasons for not celebrating Columbus/not viewing him as a "hero" or founder of North America......

Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas.. He did not even land here on North American soil to begin with. He and his men landed on an Island in the Bahamas.. They called the natives "INdians" because they believed they were in South Asia. They did nothing but rape, plunder and pillage once they were on land.

  • I never knew it was either. Mind you I don't take much note regarding holidays of any kind but I truly wasn't aware that Columbus day was viewed by majority as anything else aside from another day to be off of work.
