Do you need a special mattress for a bunk bed?

Just tried to put a regular twin mattress on my son's new bunk bed and it sunk down through the slats so do I need a special mattress or a piece of ply wood?

  • You need what is called a bunkie board. Advertise wanted on Freecycle.
    or look on craigslist.

  • You can either spend a small fortune on what's called a "bunkie board", get a piece of plywood, OR take some wood slats and build a slat system across the bottom of the bed (with 1X6s).

  • I just have a regular mattress in my boys beds. It is really thick I do know depending on the bunk bed you may need a different mattress

  • I used to work at Badcock Home Furnishings and they have (and other people carry them too) specially made mini box springs for bunk beds. You can use a regular mattress and put this under it and it works much better than a piece of plywood whic has the possibility of splitting or breaking. They run about $30-40 at Badcock. They are about 2-3 inches thick if I remember correctly. Also many places do have mattresses which have the box built in, but the matresses are hard as a rock. :(

  • My son has an auto immune disease and is just a big boy. He bruises easy so I really don't want a super hard bed. I will look into the mini box spring, thank!

  • Not sure if you can buy this online or if you have one in your area, but they do have a store locator. :) GL!
