  • Carving pumpkins (and other vegetables, such as turnips) into Jack O'Lanterns has basis in a legend of Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil, not once but twice. Because he was an unsavory character, God wouldn't let him into heaven...but because of the treachery, the devil wouldn't let him into hell either...so he was cursed to roam the earth by night with nothing but a glowing coal he placed into a carved turnip to light his way.
