Why Is This?

I was just wondering about something.
Why are heterosexual people called straight? Are gay people crooked?
Why are homosexual men called gay and homosexual women called lesbians? Aren't people who are homosexual called gay no matter if they are male or female?
I really would like to know the answers to these.

  • The word lesbian comes from the Greek Island of Lesbos, where the poet Sappho lived in 600 B.C. Sappho was an intellectual and poet who wrote many love poems to other women. Although much of her poetry has been destroyed by religious fundamentalists, the few poems of Sappho that remain speak clearly to her love and infatuation with women.

the term straight originates from this: from the old term " walking the straight and narrow"

In this context the word 'gay' came to represent, as it does now, a word with no negative connotations but associated with a positive and proud sense of identity
