'Muslim' and 'Islam' Arent' Two Different Religions, Are They?

I thought Muslim is a culture and/or people.

I thought Islam was a religion.

But I just read somewhere that they were both their own different religion.

What is correct?

  • I am a Muslim, which is one who submits and I follow the religion of Islam which means to submit. Muslim is an adherent of Islam. In Arabic they are part of the same root word so it's kind of the same difference between Christian and Christianity. There is no such thing as Muslim culture but there is to a degree an Islamic culture, i.e. one that is based in the religion of Islam but this coincides with ones ethnic culture which is why Muslims in Egypt and Muslims in India both have very different cultures except that matters which pertain specifically to religion generally are different while religious matters vary by the school of thought and scholarly advice you are following.

  • Islam is a religion. A Muslim is someone who lives by the code of laws and lifestyle laid down by Islam, although technically they don't HAVE to be Islamic.
