Why was it unusal that Jesus was talking with the woman at the well?

  • The woman was a Samaritan. They were not thought of highly back then. John 4: 9 "Then the woman said to him "How is it that You being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans."

  • A couple reasons. A man would not talk with a woman in public, and a Jew would not ordinarily talk with a Samaritan.

  • Later int he story it talks more about her life and how she had been married to several men and was at the time living with a man who was not her husband. she was more than likely looked down on by her community and not spoken to often let alone asked for a drink from her bucket.

  • She was a samaritan, so she was considered lower than the jews, plus she was a woman by herself and he was a man by himself.

  • Because during that time period a Jewish man would not talk to a woman who he was not married too or related to.
