If the President nominee dies before election....

My dad asked this to see if I knew the answer. What happens **IF** the presidential nominee dies BEFORE the election takes place? Who gets the nominiation? Does the VP automatically get the Presidential nominiation? Or is it chosen by the respective party? AND If the VP gets its automatically, when does the VP choose a new VP-before or after election?

  • I want to say that it's given the the person who that party thinks it should be given too.

So if McCain died before the election I want to say the Republican get to pick. If Obama died before the election I want to say the Democrats get to pick.

  • Yes, SAHMinIL is right. Only the respective parties can fill any vacancy left by a deceased nominee.
