  • I would suggest starting with www.knittinghelp.com to watch videos on the different stitches, and practicing dishclothes to get knit and purl down before tackling larger projects. http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory.php is a great resource for all sorts of patterns.

  • lion brand yarn has a good website with lots of cute (free) patterns, how-to tutorials and videos. also searching youtube.com and finding a tutorial series is very helpful, i learned to crochet this way! any of the big name brands for yarn will have websites with free patterns, after you've learned how to read them and how to do a few stitches you can use any pattern you like!

  • ravelry.com It's a website for knitters/crocheters. They have a HUGE pattern archive that is searchable. If there is a pattern online it will be listed at ravelry. Plus they have groups if you need help.

  • www.bernat.com has lots of free patterns and advice. The down side is they are all written for their brand of yarn so if you're just starting converting for another yarn may be difficult. On the other hand, bernat's baby yarn is usually pretty nice and very cheap.
