Making a Lentil dish...substitution

I am making a lentil soup and see that it calls for cayenne pepper I don't have any. I have chili powder and white pepper not sure what would work best any ideas???

  • If it was mw I would use the white pepper to taste. The chili powder is going to add flavor you may not want.

  • I would not use the chili powder. White or black pepper is better. If you have any red pepper flakes you cangrind a few up to add if you really want the heat of the cayeene.

  • Thanks read the ingredients on the chili powder and see what you mean...I ended up adding a bit of hot chili sauce...doesn't have the other spices just chili peppers.

  • I have never used cayenne pepper or chili powder in mine. I season with bouillon cubes and bay leaves.

  • I love cayenne pepper and use it for many recipes - I'd run out and get some!
