Do your kids get enough sleep?

Excerpts from article by Dr. Jennifer Ashton, CBS News online:
Is your child sleeping well?

About one in four children don't, but their problems are often missed, according to new research from The American Academy of Sleep Medicine that suggests pediatricians may be under-diagnosing sleep disorders in children.

Undiagnosed disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, night terrors, sleepwalking, snoring, grinding teeth, and bedwetting, Ashton said, are all disruptions in sleep that can impact a child's learning, growth and development.

  • Well we put her to bed at 8, sometimes she tantrums (she is 4 1/2) until 9 or 930, and wakes up at 7 or 730...so i assume so?

The baby gets enough sleep for sure, usually 12-14 hours at night (goes to bed at 8 also) and then a 2-3 hour nap.

  • Two of my children get at least 8 hrs- but my 19 y/o is burning the candle at both ends despite my pleas to take better care of himself. My 21 y/o & I both wear night guards- him for grinding & mine for clenching. I get about 7 hrs a nite. Hubby snores, prob. has sleep apnea too, but typically wont go to the Dr. for it!

  • They go to bed around 8:30 during the week and get up around 6:30 or 7. During the weekend, they usually pass out around midnight or so and get up around nine.

  • I believe mine do. They (5yrs and 2yrs) are both in bed by 8pm and asleep no later than 8:30pm. My daughter (2yrs) usually wakes up once between 1am-3am for a drink and then goes back to sleep until I get them both up at 6am. They normally get up by themselves by 5:30am, but if not then I wake them up at 6am during the week or let them sleep in on the weekends (almost never happens lol).

  • No, I worry about that. My 5 yr old is a bad sleeper. No matter how early we get him to bed he won't sleep more than 8 hrs, and he never naps anymore.
