Black Americans being called "African American"

I am wondering why black Americans call themselves "African American". What is so bad about being a black American? I mean Black Canadians don't call themselves African Canadians, or Black French call themselves African Frenchmen, so I am wondering why??

This is not intended to be a "racist" question, but I, being a White American, could never understand this concept of "African American" - unless of course you have moved here from Africa - then by all means. I know white people taht are truly African American - because they moved here from Africa. Please help me understand! Thanks!

  • I agree. I am Black and just call myself Black. I don't see the big deal. Some older blacks don't like the name. I guess its a form of identity because of history but I actually just say I'm Black.

  • I completely agree and see nothing wrong with being just plain-black. My cousins are mixed [1/2 and 1/2] and they HATE to be referred to as black, or african-american. They are "mixed-race" WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL????

  • Americans are so stuck on labels and titles... They have to be able to call people something, and apparently "African-American" is more politically correct... I dont understand at all... Does this make me "Caucasian-American"?

  • Honestly - I guess it's not a big deal. But just soemthing I have been curious about for most of my adult life. But I am not an Indian American or Scottish American.... I am an American. My heritage is Indian, Scottish, Irish, etc. I understand that African is their heritage, but it isn't who they are now.
