1 Bump

The baby keeps getting constipated.

Should I be worried? She's breast fed, sixteen months old, nurses at least ten times a day, eats more veggies and fruits then anything else, followed by meat and then starch. By all rights she should be pooping her little heart out.

  • What's she doing that's causing you to think it's constipation? Are her poops hard or pebble-like?

  • She's straining really hard, poops are VERY solid, sometimes like little stones.

  • Any dairy, possible food intolerances? Dairy and for some reason rice products used to do that with DD, as did the "meals" in a jar that we tried for a little bit. Dried prunes/prune juice should get her moving if anything will. Have you called her ped? She shouldn't be getting constipated with nursing that much unless there is another issue like a food allergy/intolerance.

  • My daughter had problems like that when she was really small, probably about the same age. I did not realize that apples and apple juice could make her constipated. Check into the fruits and veggies that she is eating to make sure none of those could be making the problem worse. When she was older, we had a problem with cheese - she loved it, but it also made her constipated - turned out she was lactose intolerant !! GL !!!

  • I'd also make an appointment with her pediatrician and see what they say.

  • Are you giving her iron fortified cereal? The iron can back things up. Could be a food allergy also.

  • offer her water with her food besides the breast, it happens to my 8 month old too and she is breastfed too. also prunes help as well.
