My 2 year old son is a total Virgo, and he has a weird thing about his sleeves being pushed up or his pants bunching at his knees. He freaks out if you don't pull his sleeves down after washing his hands (or remind him that short sleeves don't pull down), and if his pants bunch up at night, he cries until I fix it. We went round and round for an HOUR last night because his pants wouldn't come down as far as he wanted. Could he have OCD? Should I talk to his ped? We try to tell him that things don't have to be just-so, but this one really bugs him.

  • Dont worry, he may just outgrow this. My son had some little "habits" of his own when he was about that age. I think that it's more about routine or habit, vs OCD. He did eventually stop doing this. Now he is a brilliant slob! :)

  • my son has similar "quirks" as well, he will be 3 soon and some of them have calmed down, apparently its more and more common for kids to have texture sensory issues.. my son won't wear certain pants that are too "itchy" and rough feeling. He has to wash his hands if they are the slightest bit sticky and the bunching of his pants at age 2 happened too so we couldn't buy him sweatpants because they kept creeping up his legs.. these are things that are really "harmful" so I have never mentioned them to his ped as they have calmed down..

  • That sounds more like a sensory issue. And his doesn't sound so bad. Just keep reminding him or show him how to fix it himself. If it gets too bad, They make sensory safe clothes for kids. Like tagless, no cuff sleeves and pants. This is a SPD(Sensory Processing Disorder) Clothing website.

  • Poor little guy. I would definitely reach out to you pediatrician because at his age you might find that he's eligible for early intervention. Behavior Therapy might really help since he's so young not completely set in his ways...yet (although it probably didn't seem that way last night).

btw - I'm a Virgo - but none of those things bother me... ;o) Good luck!

  • Why can't people have quirks? Is that so bad? I am ocd but it hasn't ruined my life. I wouldn't do anything unless it becomes very extreme and is interfering with his functioning.....let the kid have his sleeves whatever way works for him.

  • Pumelo, when he's losing sleep and screaming and crying at 3AM when his pants aren't down far enough, it's a problem. That's why I'm concerned. I don't care if he has quirks, I think all the others he has are cute. This one worries me, though.
