  • We switched to prepaid cell phones & pay $5 a month.
I started cooking a lot more from scratch and cut $100 - $150 off our grocery bill. I buy store brand unless name brand is on sale & I have a coupon, enough to make it cost less than store brand. We also got intense about raising chickens & growing a large garden & preserving what we could.
I cut my own hair now, along with any coloring, highlights, etc. I also cut the rest of the family's hair.
Husband takes lunches & coffee from home, no vending machine snacks or going out for lunch.
We use our wood furnace almost exclusively to heat the home during winter, cutting back on our use of propane to heat.
I searched the internet for great gift ideas that I could make. This cut back on Christmas gift expenses.
Kids' clothing comes from garage sales or thrift stores as much as possible (you can find some GREAT deals there!)
We combine errands, avoiding unnecessary driving.

  • No hairdressers, unless I'm reeeeely starting to look like a junglewoman. In which case, no expensive hairdressers and no highlighs. Sigh. No mani's, pedi's ,restaurants, expensive clothes. No nice holidays. We only go to the doctor if we at death's door. We also now use water and electricity sparingly.

  • Absolutely everything! We pee in the toliet 2-3 times before flushing it. It sounds gross but we never have company over so no one knows. Its saved me $5 a month in water. That's $60 a year. We don't go out to restuarnts or mobies. We don't rent movies. We don't run the dishwasher. We buy more generic. We eat less often in general. We unplug everything that we aren't using. We don't leave a security light on at night anymore,we don't go on vacations or long car rides, all of this in addition to what we already did to ave $.

  • Everything! As things got tougher and tougher we as a family would sit down with a list each one to offer things that they could squeeze to pay the bills. Although, the economy is getting better, slowly, which is exactly what it needs even though it still hurts. But if our country grows to fast it will go bust again. I think sharing and caring for one another has been the key to ease the pain. We DO stand united dont we? Its a wonderful feeling when all is said and done. Even when it hurts.

  • Extra's.. I am cheap about what I buy at the store, usually just buying enough for the week. No coffee or fancy drinks at my favorite coffee house. No restaurants, unless kids eat free, and that is still only occasionally. Generic everything. No hairdressers, no movies, no extra toys at the store
