Why is "progressive" a dirty word?

It seems like we'd rather have a "progressive" government than a "regressive" one, right?

  • Progressive ....progress.
Regressive.....going back, not helping anything to grow forward or improve. Fear of change.
That's the way I see it.
Yeahhh....what the heck is wrong with progressive?

  • Progressive with a capitalized "p" is not the same as "progressive" as in your prize winnings in a poker tournament. The Progressives formed at the turn of the 20th century with some very Orwellian ideas of social reform. These included: sterilization and forced abortion for non-whites and non-protestants, as well as non-English speaking European immigrants (which, by the Progressive doctrine, were all exact equivalents of being mentally retarded). Progressives sent women out into the cities to "teach" immigrant women the "correct" way to keep their home and raise their children because they believed ONLY white, anglo-saxon protestants were smart enough to do it correctly. You'd also be interested to know that this Progressive movement was integral to the birth of the klan, the extensive hatred of freed blacks in the south, and the push to keep poor share croppers poor while the "smart" rich white farmers kept control.

  • My question is what educated person would ever want to be associated with the movement, let alone offended when someone points out what it really represents?

  • NotPanicking, I'm not offended by what you're saying, but you are talking about the PAST, that's not what Progressive means NOW. I mean, sheesh, Catholics used to kill people who didn't believe as they did, as far as I know, they don't do that anymore either, do they? Women who were believed to be witches used to be burned or drowned, I don't see that happening anymore either...

I would LOVE to know who would consider Progressives nowadays to be the racist, discriminatory ones...

  • Yeah...Progressive NOW is totally different from the "Orwellian" Progressives of the last century. Get up with the times and talk to a few progressives. Its amazing how people dwell on the evils of the past and the stereotypical labels that mean nothing. It really is irrational and baseless FEAR.

So you're saying it's like calling someone a Yankee...silly and meaningless? Then why do "they" use it in attack ads so often?

  • IMO~The Progressive Ideals go against the Constitution. They believe the Federal Government should be responsible for issues that Constitution clearly defines as the responsibility of the States. They seem to be less concerned with the Economic issues surrounding the government and more concerned with social engineering. They have less concern for financial accountability in comparison to their overwhelming concern for Social Engineering. As we watch Greece, France, etc financially failing in large part because of entitlement programs~ I think we can see the flaws in Progressive Ideals and hopefully not head down their path.

Really? Progressivism is international. Some ultra liberal democrats in the US tie their hopes to it, but it's not contained in the US, it simply has a chapter here. Progressivism is what just banned burqas in France. It's what pushes the anti-immigrant hatred in Scandinavia. In the US, it's the groups that support eco-terrorists like ALF and ELF and favor eminent domain over the protection of personal property rights. If you want to embrace it, you have to embrace ALL of it, not just the bits and pieces you like - this isn't a religion.
