What is a good application to scan my computer for viruses?

My computer is running slow and I keep getting pop ups saying my computer is at risk etc... What is a good site to scan my computer and keep it safe? I would preffer free...or inexpensive if there is such a thing!! I'm not very computer savy so thanks for any help you can give.

  • I run Avast free home edition and Zone Alarm firewall. Both are free...I also do periodic checks with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware... this too is free.

  • Google -= Microsoft Security Essentials -- it is a download but it is free. It will help update, scan and clean your computer better than AVG, Norton, McFee and the other free downloads. It is the best one I have used

  • I tried the Windows Live OneCare scanner and was ready to punch the screen...it took hours, this is normal, and then crashed at the end just as it brought up the results! Not cool!
