Why to cops give tickets for a taillight being out.

i'm sure if people KNEW they were out we would fix it but most of the time we don't.You know when your headlight is out since its out in front. Why not just let us know why give out tickets. Just curious.

  • Because technically before you drive you are supposed to make sure that everything is in good working order. Usually a police will just give you a warning for thatssort of infraction.

  • Well...they don't think not knowing is an excuse. My husband actually has me sit in the car periodically and he walks around the car and has me turn on the lights, touch the brakes so he can check brake lights, and check the turn signals. It's a safety issue, and they expect you to make sure that your lights are all working properly.

Some cops will give you a warning, other's won't. It's just a "fix it" ticket here, which means it doesn't cost you anything, you just have to prove that you've taken care of it.

  • Sometimes it's hard to see cars at night and with no tail lights who have a chance at being rear ended.

  • Wow! That's not right.

We were stopped once but were given a verbal warning. This was my husband's car. We had it fixed the same day and then checked my car to make sure my were working and it turned out I had one out too. We had that fixed as well. We sure were business that day getting the right lights bulbs for our cars.

  • It's a sneaky way for them to pull you over so they can get into your business.

They do use this as a way to pull over cars that may need more checking out, once they have a car pulled over, they can look inside.

Also its their job to ensure public safety. Lets be honest, there ARE people out there who would NEVER get a tail light fixed if they werent worried about having to pay a fine.

  • So that you don't cause an accident because someone doesn't know you're in front of them, when you're driving in the dark.

  • A lot of times it depends on your attitude when you get pulled over.

  • Because you are supposed to do a walk around your car before driving it to make sure it is in working order. Also, it is a safety hazard to have lights out.
