How long is a home study good for?

If we do a home study, then wait three years to adopt, will we need to spend the time and money to do another home study? Does it depend on the state?

  • Depends on the state you are certified in and what agency you use. In NY, private adoption certification is good for 18 months. Foster Care/Adopt is 12 months. Your state may be different. I would ask your agency or attorney. They will know for sure. :)

  • Depends on the state -- in Texas, it's six months, then it has to be updated.

  • Every state has different laws and requirements...Georgia is 1 year. We had to renew ours when the China process extended past 1 year...

  • I know in MI they are good for one year. Check with your state for specifics though.
