Is it okay for a 6 month old baby to go without 1 of his 5 bottles for the day?

Some background: He's 6 months old, but born 2 months premature. He's not sitting up without support yet, so he's not on any solid foods. He's still totally formula-fed. He takes 5, 6-oz bottles daily. Because of how late he woke up today, and us being stuck out in traffic for a part of the day, he'll be one bottle down (only getting 4, 6-oz bottles today) unless I keep him up to 2:30 a.m. to get the 5th one in him! I know he won't be hungry without the 5th one, but I'm worried about missing a bottle full of nutrition and brain-building nutrients. Is that indeed a big deal, or not really for one bottle, one day? (First-time mom here.) Thanks so much for answering.

  • Just make sure his belly is full before he goes to bed and he'll be fine. He'll wake up and tell you if he wants a late feeding to catch up. Otherwise, just get him back on schedule for tomorrow as best you can.

  • It is perfectly fine if he misses one bottle. Some babies do occassionally skip how many bottles they have in a day, or circumstances forces us or the child to miss one. It's okay as long as the child is still getting enough to eat. As long as the baby gets those other four bottles then that's great. They'll let you know if they need that fifth bottle or not, so it's not neccisary to keep him up until 2am to get him that bottle. Technically that means you're giving him six bottles the next day, because 2am is the start of the next day. Therefore, if your child isn't showing any signs of needing any more then it's okay to only give him the four.

  • He is getting more than enough formula. He should drink at least 24 ounces of formula in a 24 hour day. It is fine to give him more and every now and then it is fine if he doesn't drink it all. I'm a nurse. When a baby is hungry they'll let you know ;-) Good luck!
