Do you set a sleep schedule for your tod or let them sleep when they are sleepY??

I have always just let my baby sleep when he's tired- he naturally takes 2 naps a day and is tired at around 8pm... but a friend at work and i had a conversation and she was telling me she has set a specific nap time for her lil girl ever since she was a baby, napping at exactly noon & another nap at 3 or something and bed time strictly at 8pm... and if she wouldn't sleep she would keep her lil girl up until the next nap time or bed time... great idea I thought... but what do you recommend ??

  • Tried to keep a schedule but sometimes the schedule just didn't work.

  • We tried scheduling naps several times, and DS had other ideas. He goes to bed around 8:30PM, and gets up around 8 or 8:30AM, then takes a 1 1/2-2 hour nap at some point during the day, usually pretty late.

  • my daughter set her own schedule but we try to keep her routine. its usually up by 7:30 recently and she has been going to bed around 8 lately. it use to be bedtime was 7:30 but i pushed it later and it has worked ou tbecause going to bed at 7:30 has woke her up around 6:30. she is a great sleeper. she naps at daycare for two hours and when she is at home she usually sleeps for 1 or 2 naps a day. today she had two naps. naps usually differ but bed time is usually the same.

  • I breastfed my son and he has always napped at the same times every day. He's 2 now and is down to one nap/day - at 1 o'clock. He goes to bed at 7:30pm and wakes up around 7 am. He has always had set naptimes.

  • I wanted a schedule but my son just won't take to it anymore. He wont take naps anymore but he falls asleep now by usually 8:30. Its difficult but i've come to realize forcing it on him just isn't working. I think its different for every children

  • I did a little bit of both. I watched her cues & just stuck to that. I did not let it waiver too much

  • Before 6 months I didnt have my DS on a schedule. I felt like he is a newborn and will nap when he is tired. Because I am a SAHM I knew exactly when he was ready for sleep. AFter that we stuck with a schedule. I feel like they can get confused otherwise. My DS is 2 3/4. He wakes up anywhere from 5:30-6:30 (but he does not wake ups til 6:30..we have a method for that...uug)..naps around 12:30 (earlier if we have an afternoon event). He will sleep anywhere from 2-3 hours. He then is in bed around 7:30 but generally reads quiestly until a little after 8.
