Heartworm medicine?

What kind of heartworm medicine do you give your dog? We've been using Sentinel but its expensive...seems worth it though

  • Heartworm Prevention is very important, especially in areas with larger problems with mosquitos (which is the carrier). Heartworm infestation is a serious problem, and most often times fatal. Heartworm treatment is EXTREMELY expensive (hundreds of dollars for just one shot! and it takes a series of shots to treat the heartworms).
So, for the health of your pet, the money should be worth it! :)

  • Heartworm meds are expensive, no matter what kind you get.

  • Actually we do not use anything. There are very few reported cases here in Washington so the vets that I work for do not suggest them. We always used Heartline but that was years ago when we lived in the South.

  • Heart guard. :)
All good heart worm meds are expensive though.

  • I am such a dork I combined Heargard and Frontline. So when we used it, it was Heartgard.

  • We don't live in the south, we live in the midwest, and had a dog with heartworms, (a rescue dog we took in). Our vet said it's everywhere, not just here and in the south.... Mosquitos are everywhere.

  • Well, we always used ivermectin to worm our dogs, and it's supposed to also take care of heart worms too, but it is NOT listed for dogs. It's mostly used for cattle and other livestock. It's cheaper than heart worm medicine, and that's all I've ever used. But it's not listed for dogs, so take that as you will.
